Eli Lieb On His Music, Bullying, and Why He's Still Single

2014 has been a big year for out singer/songwriter Eli Lieb. A free digital download of his single “Safe in My Hands” premiered with Allstate’s #OutHoldingHands campaign, encouraging LGBT folks to post pictures of themselves displaying affection in public. It was accompanied by a beautifully animated short film, garnering almost half a million views. The song was even featured on the summer finale of the hit ABC Family television show, The Fosters.

In July, Lieb released his single “Zeppelin,” from his upcoming second studio album. Popular music producer, John Feldmann, is working with Lieb on the album, and a second single, “Lightning in a Bottle,” was released in November.

Originally gaining attention through his YouTube videos and popular song covers, Lieb has upwards of 25 million views. He is a staunch supporter of equality in media, performing at the GLAAD Gala San Francisco: Game Changers event.

At 35, the currently single singer has landed several “most eligible bachelor” titles, including OUT and most recently, Frontiers. And, given the chance we just had to chat with him.

Why are you single?

Sometimes, I don't know. It's hard to meet people regardless of who you are. I'm looking for someone that fits in.

What's your ideal man?

[He is] confident in who he is. I'm very spiritual, and need to connect with someone on that level, too.

Is "Lightning in a Bottle" about somone special?

It's not about one person. People doubt themselves and hide who they are. It can be scary. But, once you do the the whole world opens up. I wrote this song for anybody that's struggling.

"Lightning in a Bottle" could be an anti-bullying anthem. Was that your intention?

I've had really tough times. When I was younger, I was bullied because I was overweight. You have to believe in who you are. You're never going to please everybody. Listen to yourself and be your own judge. That was my intention.
